How to connect water-sustainability working people in the Upper Rhine Region?

In the trinational Upper Rhine Region (URR), many people are working on the thematics of water sustainability, and a number of collaborative networks exist, being regional or transnational, focused on a given discipline or inter- or even transdisciplinary, but still there are gaps to be bridged between:

  • National Borders: people performing the same type of work (e.g. in context of research, training, technical projects or governance) but living in different countries (and having different legal, institutional, or value frameworks),
  • Sectorial Borders: people working on a specific thematics but working in different societal fields (e.g., researchers and public or private end-users of knowledge) and who would like to find others who would like to share and transfer their knowledge.

The general objective:

The URR water family (in analogy to the UNESCO Water family connecting water-related UNESCO Chairs and Category-2-Centers) aims to bridge the national and sectorial gaps. It will build up a consented and searchable databank with the relevant information needed to find partners for cooperation and organise targeted meetings helping to build up contacts and to find common goals.

The specific objectives:

The URR water family will focus on the following specific objectives:

  1. build up of a databank helping to find partners with similar thematic/methodological interests
  2. organise general (entire water family) meetings
  3. provide lists of regional experts when organising a conference or stakeholder (or inter-sectoral) thematic meetings
  4. create interest groups for cooperations
  5. be prepared for opening calls for funding research and application projects
  6. facilitate the co-construction of projects
  7. identify arising thematics (including problems) and formulate them in a way that they can be used to influence policies (e.g., via jointly produced White Papers)
