Karl Matthias Wantzen

Prof. Dr. Karl Matthias Wantzen is an ecologist and holder of the EUCOR Excellence Chair Water and Sustainability as well as the UNESCO Chair Rivers and Heritage at the University of Strasbourg and KIT Karlsruhe. His research focuses on ecology, biodiversity, and human–nature interactions in freshwater systems and their aquatic–terrestrial interface zones. He has a particular interest in the biocultural diversity of rivers, the threats they face, and sustainable management strategies involving local communities. He has led numerous international projects and regularly publishes on the innovative concept of River Culture, promoting dialogue between science, society, and river management on a global scale.

In this lecture, Prof. Wantzen will present the concept of River Culture: Our Natural Flow, an approach aimed at harmonizing the relationships between rivers, human societies, and ecosystems. He will explore how this approach can support sustainable freshwater management, strengthen cooperation among local stakeholders, and help preserve the natural and cultural heritage associated with rivers worldwide.
