Context and objectives of ITI SWITCH

Launched in January 2025, ITI SWITCH brings together research units, academic departments, and doctoral schools to strengthen interdisciplinarity in both research and training, while enhancing the international visibility of the University of Strasbourg.

Its main objectives are to:

  • Strengthen research capabilities in environmental and sustainability sciences
  • Promote interdisciplinary approaches and international collaboration
  • Foster societal engagement

Each year, ITI SWITCH supports research projects addressing six challenges across three main work packages (WPs):

  • WP1: Dynamics of urban and terrestrial socio-ecological and hydrological systems
  • WP2: Sustainable trajectories of socio-ecological systems
  • WP3: Governance of socio-ecological and hydrological systems

Types of Funding

  • Develop: PhD and postdoctoral positions to advance high-level interdisciplinary research
  • Initiate: Master’s thesis projects
  • Empower: Projects involving multiple partners to strengthen transdisciplinary research

Call for proposals DEVELOP & INITIATE

As part of your project, ITI SWITCH can provide support through:

  • Develop (doctoral and postdoctoral research projects):
    • 4 co-funded PhD projects (50% of the doctoral contract);
    • 1 research project funded through the recruitment of a postdoctoral researcher (up to 18 months).
  • Initiate (Master’s research internships, M2 level):
    • 7 funded Master’s internships to explore new research topics and develop collaborative projects.

Key dates

  • Call opening: 2 November 2026
  • Submission deadline: 28 February 2027
  • Notification of results and feedback: end of May 2027

Eligibility and conditions
The project leader must belong to a laboratory within the ITI SWITCH perimeter.

How to apply
Applications must be submitted using the Call for Projects Application Form, available for download at the bottom of the page. The file must be named according to the following convention: AAP2027_acronym_ApplicantName.pdf.

Need additional support? Mobil’ITI

Mobil’ITI is a separate scheme that helps newly recruited PhD candidates to cover travel, relocation and registration costs. It also supports Master’s students, PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers attending scientific conferences. Applications are open all year round and do not go through the Call for Projects application form.
